There are countless different types of yoga, all with benefits for our physical and mental health.
That means there are lots of options to choose from – and to shout about on social media. Many thousands of people take to Instagram every year to share their experience of the practice.
While most yogis are unlikely to stray far from the traditional, there are many alternative trends out there for the more adventurous.
We have ranked some of the world’s quirkiest yoga types by the number of their Instagram hashtags. Here’s the lowdown of the top 10.
1. Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga
Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga sees people holding yoga poses while floating on water on a flat paddleboard platform. It’s a tough but popular balancing act, which tops our list.
2. Goat Yoga
Goat Yoga is a favourite of celebrities like Khloe Kardashian. The animals are left to roam freely amongst class participants and are said to provide a calming influence and a few laughs.
3. Dog Yoga
Unsurprisingly, yoga with the UK’s favourite pet is extremely popular. Yogis can bring their own furry friends – or sometimes they’re provided. The practice certainly gives a new meaning to the "downward dog".
4. Naked Yoga
Not for the faint-hearted, Naked Yoga is said to be an extremely spiritual experience. It helps you connect with the powerful forces of nature and your inner feelings in a unique way.
5. Laughter Yoga
Laughter has been proven to boost mental and physical health. So, when combined with yoga moves, it’s believed to offer the ultimate stress-busting activity.
6. Beer Yoga
Unorthodox though it may be, Beer Yoga is hugely popular among those wanting to mix their love of yoga with a visit to a beer hall, brewery, or taproom. Participants often enjoy beverages at the end of practice, or sometimes throughout.
7. Cannabis Yoga
Known for its relaxing properties, cannabis is often integrated into yoga to enhance flexibility, remove joint pain, and aid anxiety.
8. Horse Yoga
This trend sees participants hold yoga poses while on top of horses. Converts to the practice claim that the exercise is mutually beneficial to both the yogi and the horse.
9. Rave Yoga
Rave Yoga combines poses with high-energy music and offers a more upbeat way to unwind. Class members are encouraged to move, dance, and stretch while enjoying the ultimate party atmosphere.
10. Wine Yoga
What could be better than fusing practice with a crisp glass of fizz or vino? Absolutely nothing, if you’re a lover of wine yoga.
